Fun Winter Activities in Aurora & Sault Ste. Marie

Winter is here and it's time to get active. Next Apartment has some great suggestions that will get you outdoors and having fun!

Cross country skiing and Snowshoeing are not only fun winter sports, but they also offer a great workout. Cross Country Skiing can be a relaxing activity once you know what you are doing. Snowshoeing is an easy sport to get into; all you need are some snowshoes and a trail!

In Sault Ste. Marie, strap on your snowshoes and explore Bellevue Park, the John Roswell Hub Trail, or Whitefish Island Indian Reserve. During the winter months, Crimson Ridge Golf Course transforms into a snowshoe and cross-country skiing wonderland. Also, Sheppard's Bush Conservation area in Aurora is great for both activities, but provides the perfect conditions for snowshoeing.

Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding require shorter bursts of energy, making these activities less strenuous than classic skiing and snowshoeing. These are also family friendly sports; many resorts have small, easy to navigate hills perfect for novice learners. Head to Lakeridge Resort in Aurora with the family to enjoy a day on the slopes! Discounted family and group passes are also available. In Sault Ste. Marie, children 5 years and younger can ride the hills at Searchmont Resort for free.

Tobogganing and Ice Skating are activities both children and adults can enjoy. These low impact, fun activities are great reasons to get outside during the winter months. Speeding down a hill atop a sled, crazy carpet, or toboggan can provide hours of fun! Skating engages your hips, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves all at once providing a great, low impact workout.

Residents of Millwell Properties in Aurora can toboggan at Fleury park, skate outdoors at the Machell Park Ice Rink, or skate indoors at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex, all just minutes away. The most popular hill for sledding in Sault Ste. Marie is Finn Hill on Black Road, residents are also close to both the Merrifield outdoor rink and the Art Jennings Speed Skating Oval on Elizabeth Street. Indoors, residents of Sault Ste. Marie have three arenas available for public skating.

Festivals and events are also great ways to get outside and enjoy the snow! Celebrate winter at Bon Soo starting February 2nd in Sault Ste. Marie or be adventurous at Aurora's Arctic Adventure on February 19th.
